About

I love to show people things again for the first time!  That’s right.  Sometimes we can see what we thought we knew, in a whole new way.

As a tour director in the Southwest, a guide in Washington, or as an international visitor liaison with overseas visitors, sharing stories and places of this country is what I truly enjoy.

I’ve been privileged to show young people Washington, DC for WorldStrides for thirteen years.  I also work for the US Department of State as an international visitor liaison escorting official guests of our government around our country.

I created Off the Record Tours to tell the stories behind the sites in Washington.  Specialized tours include Capitol Hill, Embassy Row, Arlington National Cemetery, and tours customized to the client’s needs.  My motto:  The crowd goes one way; we go the other.

In Washington, where I have lived for more than thirty-five years, my favorite thing to do are taking visitors to the Lincoln Memorial at night, Eastern Market on weekends, evensong at Washington National Cathedral, guessing who’s in a motorcade, the Evening Parade at the 8th & I Marine Corp barracks, and Politics and Prose bookstore.

I have traveled to England, Spain, Greece, Russia, Croatia, Antigua and Barbuda, China, South Africa, Portugal, Italy, Netherlands, Turks and Caicos, Canada, France, St Lucia, Germany, Lithuania, St Barts, Honduras, the Bahamas, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and the Cayman Islands. In the US I have visited 48 states (Idaho and Nebraska I will get to you!).

I hold a BS from Elizabethtown College and a MSW from Bryn Mawr College.

Some of my favorite things:  Basset hounds,  The Godfather I & II, John le Carre novels, Bruce Springsteen in concert.

Hobbies & Interests
International travel is my true joy. When I'm not doing that or guiding, I enjoy filming and editing videos for my YouTube channel. I also read widely and enjoy grilling, entertaining, and visiting with neighbors. One of my earliest hobbies, and one where I learned so much about US history, is stamp collecting. I also love basset hounds!

Virtual Tour Experience

I create and deliver virtual tours for the US Department of State for use in their International Visitors Leadership Program. I can show it privately, but they are not available to the general public. I also have a YouTube channel where I regularly post stories about obscure Washington people, events, and places. https://www.youtube.com/c/OffTheRecordTours

Testimonials

David was the best course leader I've ever had... I'd like to request him in the future. He explained things better than any course leader has in the past. He was firm with the kids when he needed to be but didn't seem bothered when I felt my kids were inattentive. Glowing recommendation and I hope he is our guide moving forward....Please arrange for my group to have him again. June 2024

I thought David was fantastic. He was very knowledgeable and had a lot of good information to share with the group. He was positive and a good leader throughout. I hope that we will get to have David as a course leader again. June 2024

We loved working with David. His knowledge base and ability to deliver content effectively to students was superior. He is also gifted with a voice that carries even in venues that are noisy. May 2024

David was knowledgeable and interesting. He knew a lot of historical stories and details of the architecture and buildings. He kept a manageable walking pace. We really enjoyed it and would definitely get him for another tour.   October 2022

David was amazing!!! I loved how he gave the students things to think about or look for. I also love how he presented the good and the bad of history. I would love to have him again!!!!   June 2021

If you really want to see, feel, experience, and understand the good, the bad, and the ugly of Washington, DC, Off the Record Tours is who you're looking for. Tour Guide David Shaw does a fantastic job bringing an ironic humor to the stories, characters, and history of the city. My tour today with David was out to Mount Vernon and around Hains Point, and the National Mall. He had a great way of adding anecdotes, creating connections, and guiding the journey that left me wanting to learn more. He also shared interesting books, movies, and websites to do just that. Did you know you could spot a giant 15 foot blue cockerel on the roof of the National Museum of Art while driving up Pennsylvania Avenue? David does and will make sure you don't miss it.  April 2021

Being from Colorado I did not know much about DC history. But I do now, thanks to David’s extensive knowledge of the way Capitol Hill was developed. He wove important historical facts with stories that illuminated the people and the times that shaped the area. And doing it on foot provided the opportunity to see the area the way it would have been seen in the pre automobile era and burn off lunch by walking about 7,000 steps. I highly recommend David and this tour!   October 2020

We continue to enjoy having David as our guide. He always has the kids' best interest in mind throughout the trip. He is engaged with them throughout the tour both on and off the bus. He has the kids volunteer to help him out, and can tell when the kids are needing something new. When other things came about, he was very willing to discuss with us what might be the best solution or possibilities. Our trust in him is such a comforting piece when planning for out trips. We hope to continue to have him as a course leader!   May 2017
