I grew up in Glendale, CA, just outside of Los Angeles. I went “back east” to college to Wesleyan University in Connecticut. I was on the rowing team and dabbled in theater. Because of my love of history and politics, I moved to Washington, DC and secured a job as a program instructor for Close Up, where I got my first taste of guiding. We took groups of high school students all over DC for week long programs focusing on history and government. We used the city as our classroom and it was an outstanding training for guiding and teaching of all kinds. I went on to teach and work in nonprofits focusing on education. I spent 9 years at C-SPAN, the cable network, running programs for teachers and students, including community outreach events in cities all over the country connected with the network’s history programming. I spent 3 years at the Library of Congress doing similar work.
In 2015, my husband and I hit the road in an Airstream trailer – aiming to drive cross country and see as much as possible. We stayed on the road two years, and I finished with a stint as a National Park Ranger in Vermont, another great training experience for guiding as I was an interpreter in a historic house connected to three centuries of land stewardship. We relocated to Maine, in the town of Bath, a historic ship building city with a strong tradition of historic preservation. I am an elementary school librarian and two years ago, coming out of the pandemic, I launched a walking tour business, focusing on history and historic homes here in Bath (Embark Maine Tours). I am looking to see if I can make guiding a full-time, (nearly) year-round profession!
