About

The creative part of touring is my passion.  I love digging for the stories that bring a place to life for visitors and surprising them with a connection to the past, a local treat, an unexpected treasure.  My specialty is the East Coast, and even more so, the New England area.  I spent several years as a tour director in Europe before coming back to the USA and running tours of North America, including Mexico and eventually, Cuba.  I believe that every group is different and that a good tour director/guide reads their group and provides what the group is expecting, and more.  I love a challenge and see the unexpected as a way for the tour operator and guide to shine.  I am looking forward to these next few months as we navigate changes in the sites available to guests, hotels, meals and all the rest.  Bring it on, I can’t wait!

Testimonials

"You have been a perfect tour manager.  You are so knowledgeable & competent.  We also appreciate your wonderful sense of humor.  We feel lucky to have had you as a tour manager."

K. A. Boling  -  Historic America

"Our guide - Hilary Johnson - was brilliant: she brought it all to life for us, and sorted any problems without anybody realising. We said a sad goodbye to her when our tour ended, and felt like we were losing an old friend."  -Lionel Braden, UK

We finished the tour with a great meal in historic Alexandria (it's worth a day's exploration on its own) followed by a "Washington by night" bus tour where we saw the monuments all lit up and visited the Jefferson Monument and the Kennedy Art Centre. A great way to end a great tour, expertly lead by tour manager Hilary Campbell-Johnstone.  A very satisfied customer."  - Dave Bradley

Best tour guide (Hillary) and best driver (JoAnn) we have had on any tour.

Hillary was a great tour guide, with knowledge of history, geography, language and the people from each area of New England. We were able to see parts of all the New England states, enjoy great meals and see the sights.  -Karen K
