About

I am a quirky, fun lady from the Pacific NW. I enjoy arts and crafts and my newest obsession is needle felting. Mixed media and fiber arts are my jam!

I am currently a driver and walking guide here in Portland and love what I do! I work as a local step on guide for a few different operators and love leading adult and student tours. Driving my guests out to beautiful locations, while sharing the many interesting stories of my home state, has become the best job I have ever experienced and I love doing it.

I also am a guide for a tour operator in Japan. I go to Japan and meet adult tour groups and guide them over the course of a week to ten days. It is truly my dream come true job, and I tap into my many years of customer service to make sure these guests actualize the trip of a lifetime.

I enjoy hiking and all of the outdoor recreation here in the PNW. I can be found at the Portland Saturday Market on weekends or Beaverton’s Farmer’s Market on Wednesday nights. I love Portland’s rich food culture, and have many food cart and restaurant recommendations ready to go.

I have a plethora of pets – a flock of chickens, 2 cats, and a dog. One of my cats has his own Instagram page!

I love rockhounding and exploring local hot springs. Oregon is geologically rich and I am happy to share the wealth!

My family volunteers annually at Oregon Country Fair, a one of a kind crafting fair in Veneta, a small town outside of Eugene, (Tracktown, USA!) OR.

I also am bi-lingual in Japanese language and love the culture. My first trip to Japan was in 1992, where I spent a year as an exchange student. Subsequent trips to Japan included destinations like Kyoto, Nara, Kobe, Sapporo, Okayama, and Osaka. I have a deep passion for the language and culture of Japan and am always thrilled to have any opportunities to serve as a cultural bridge.

I am currently a driver guide in Portland, Oregon. I drive guests in a sprinter van to various destinations in Oregon, including The Columbia Gorge, Multnomah Falls, Oregon Wine Country, and Mt. Hood. I do step on work for various tour operators and have had repeat tours return in my short journey. I have led small and large adult and student groups and love sharing information and passion about their destination.

I also am a guide in Japan. I guide a "Land of the Rising Sun Walking Tour," where I spend a week working our way from Kyoto to Tokyo, with excursions and walking tours. To be able to give guests the trip of a lifetime is a true pleasure. Between translating, leading walking tours, serving as a concierge in destination cities, I am always faced with challenges and love the opportunity to problem solve on the fly. This is a truly rewarding experience.

As a program coordinator for Intercultural Exchange Institute, I coordinated a one month tour for Japanese college students. I facilitated visiting and touring many sites during the month, from a maternity ward in a local hospital, Nike's infamous day care and campus, Portland's various historical and tourist attractions to the beach for smores. We even visited a cemetery and mausoleum! Our time was impactful and I still stay in touch with many of those students.

At Pacific University, much of my time was spent helping students in the English Language Institute, where I toured them all over Portland and the state. Helping and watching students grow is something I have a passion for.

Fun Fact!
I have 2 cats and a dog.

Great views and a fantastic guide! AnnBowersEvangelista, Sep 2022 This was such an enjoyable trip! Shannon our guide was fantastic - her love for her hometown of Portland and for her state in general was evident in every nuanced thing she told us. She was a glorious combination of facts and passion, and rolled with whatever came along - including a flat tire! We also happened to have a great crew from Michigan who made it a warm and fun day for my husband and me. Perfect temperature, gorgeous views - not much more to ask for!

We really enjoyed our tour with Shannon. We learned a lot about Portland and visited 5 beautiful waterfalls. Shannon was knowledgeable and proud to share her city and state with us. It was not a tiring hike. She was kind and offered to take photos for us, gave good recommendation of place to eat, and picked some blackberries for us. Everything was very smooth and on time!

Amazing waterfall tour! Shannon was our guide, and she was excellent. Laid back but not too much. She provided great information about the area along the way. She even took pictures of us and picked wild blackberries for us to try. I really enjoyed all the information she gave along the way. The waterfalls and views were fabulous. We got to see 5 plus the scenic Vista. She gave lots of dinner recommendations on the way back. This tour was just the right amount of hiking. Not too hard but I'm ready for a relaxing dinner afterward.

I booked the Columbia Gorge Waterfalls 4-hour tour on a weekday afternoon. We were a group of 5 and our guide, Shannon, was very nice and generous. I learned interesting facts about the history of the area, but also fun insights from a true Portlander.
We visited 4 waterfalls (including the famous Multnomah falls) and the Vista House (unfortunately opened only on weekends) and I didn't feel rushed at all. The hike was shorter and easier than I expected, but that is the only "negative" point.
A few extras made the tour really special: complimentary snacks and bottled water, fresh marionberries and a souvenir rock.

Growing up in Seattle and now living in Tacoma, I’ve always heard it said, and often repeated myself, that the beauty in the PNW is unparalleled, especially in the summer months. So, when the end of my youngest daughter’s summer visit approached, I had faith in this mantra and made a last minute (night before) reservation for a Waterfall Tour/Hike outside Portland. This day trip will live in our memories for years to come! The Half-Day Columbia River Gorge and Waterfall Hiking tour was to begin at 2:00pm Tuesday. We decided to hit the road and just grab sandwiches on the way. We arrived in Portland about 30 minutes prior to the start of the tour and checked in with our operator, Around Portland Tours. Located in a set of business lofts and garages, the operator and their neighboring business owners were quite friendly and approachable. They even shared a parking permit so that we could park on the permitted lot worry free. Our Tour Guide, Shannon Krahel, is a Portland native that has lived in Seattle as well. So we had common ground from the start. When she mentioned Sir Mix A Lot and “Possey on Broadway” her street cred became apparent as well. Shannon was very knowledgeable about the history of Portland and gave many interesting facts, previously unknown to me, about the city’s beginnings as we started out of town. We learned facts about Portland’s main industries, past and present, as well as some of its biggest benefactors. Though we were scheduled to experience directly 4 of the 70 Waterfalls on the Gorge, because of Shannon’s efficiency, we got to directly experience 5. We began with the massive 620 feet Multnomah Falls and worked our way back towards town, ending with breath taking and more intimate Latourell Falls. The ladder being Shannon’s favorite. And one look at this beautiful and serene waterfall and its backdrop made it abundantly clear why it was her favorite. The hiking and viewing were mixed perfectly for us. What began with faith in the oft repeated mantra that PNW beauty is unparalleled, and a random internet search turned out to be the best time one on one had with my daughter for her summer visit. We will share these memories for life.
