About

I have been a licensed NYC Sightseeing Guide since 2004.  Exploring every corner of New York City is my passion – and I focus on sensory immersion, being present, and allowing serendipity to guide the day – as opposed to trying to fill up the tour with tons of detail and history.  I believe in the mystery and wonder of our universe and the great city I live in – and discovery and exploration.  I believe in tying my walks throughout the city to both the mundane and the sublime and navigating the connection between the two.  We weave myth out of the specifics of our immediate environment as we walk.  I see our walks as like that of an earthworm passing through soil.  The earth enriches the worm, as the worm enriches the earth.  But I also see my tours as something akin to a traveling dinner party.  We’re all talking, engaging, making a day that stands out – that makes us glad to be alive. In addition to leading tours, I teach classes on exploring NYC (and other topics) at The Brooklyn Brainery.  And I have taught a similar class for a branch of the Brooklyn Public Library. All of my tours conclude with a poetic recap of our adventures.  I am a musician and recorded a spoken word album of some of these.  And I created a video slide show to go along with the album.  Any of these sources can give you a good idea of the types of custom tours I can develop. Also…  someone wrote a theme song about me.

Tours Offered & Destination Knowledge

Adventure/Hiking ToursCultural/Specialty ToursGeneral Walking ToursLocal GuidePrivate Tours

Custom tours of all five boroughs on NYC - focusing on off the beaten path.  I work with the participants to develop the itinerary - or simply advise them on what they can do on their own.  I love visiting places you wouldn't believe are part of NYC.  Shipwrecks, forgotten islands, jazz concerts in private homes, ruins, obscure museums, stunning bridge walks, hidden beaches, Hindu temples, Buddhist temples, Sikh temples, food, food, food, and so much more.  NYC is unique in that EVERY block and every trail can be an avenue of fascination. In addition to having years of experience crafting all-day adventures, I also focus heavily on the basics - Where will we eat? Will there be bathrooms? Will there be coffee?  How will we get there?  How will we get back?  How long will each part of the day take?  I believe in being hyper-aware of the participants' needs while allowing the flexibility necessary to make for a GREAT travel experience.  You never know who we might meet, what might catch our attention, or even how much extra time we need to simply relax in a cafe somewhere and store up the necessary energy for the next leg of an excursion.

Fun Fact!
I am a member of a Finnegans Wake reading group.

Virtual Tour Experience

I have led virtual tours within a live classroom setting at The Brooklyn Brainery. Below is an example of a virtual tour by way of a video slide show album.

Testimonials

I never feel so alive, in the moment, excited, & in touch with the world, as when I’m on a Richard Tour.  All my senses are heightened as we explore and learn.  You really appreciate how rich & vast NYC is in every way – culturally & geographically.  There isn’t a neighborhood or street corner that isn’t worth exploring – Richard makes you see the wonder & beauty in everything.  His tours are the antithesis of 9-5 office/work-from-home life.  I encourage you to step away from your computer/phone, put on some good shoes, and join him. -Margaret G. Richard’s tours of NYC and surrounding areas are a wonderful way to experience the city’s unique exotic wonders. I’m a born-and-bred New Yorker, but every tour I discover amazing new aspects and parts of the city I call home - and have lots of fun doing it! -Edward R. Richard tours are magical and some of my favorite memories. His love for NYC shines through in every step and his ability to appreciate and share the unusual and unexpected is unmatched.  -Catherine B. I love Richard's tours so much I married him! -Suzanne L.
