About

I’m one of few guides specializing Brooklyn neighborhoods. In the 1990s, I began leading family/friends on informal tours of Brooklyn. My goal: to lead the type of energetic, interesting tours I’d take myself, with a sense of urban history, a dash of architecture and urban planning, and general curiosity about current events and controversies.

After founding my company New York Like a Native in 2000 with one tour, I’ve added numerous neighborhoods in Brooklyn, and expanded to a few neighborhoods in Queens and also the Lower East Side in Manhattan. I’ve led tours for college groups and many organizations/groups, as well singles, couples, and families.

My degree from Yale is in Political Science, but a class in architecture from the legendary Vincent Scully helped shape my interest in urbanism. My work as a journalist covering urban development gives me deeper insight into the city and its changes.

Fun Fact!
I'm also a journalist specializing in Brooklyn, so my careers complement each other.
Hobbies & Interests
I love exploring cities, whether NYC or wherever I travel. I plan fairly intense tours, trying to make the most of public transit.

Virtual Tour Experience

I've developed two 90-minute webinars--slide lectures--about the rich history of Coney Island, which I deliver regularly for the New York Adventure Club. I can present them, in full or truncated form, for others. https://www.nylikeanative.com/coneyislandwebinar.html

Additional Education

I own/have read dozens upon dozens of books on Brooklyn/NYC. I spent the pandemic rethinking how I approach my tours, both in terms of contextual history and ensuring more images to complement our walks.
