About

I am multidisciplinary professional who has achieved several skills in various areas.

First as a manager of IT resources, I have developed a capacity for closing the gap between users and technology under a human-oriented approach.

I believe that human essence flows from the sensory capacity of music, art and movement. Because of this sensibility, I have dedicated over a decade of my life to the practice and research of Capoeira, the foremost Afro-Brazilian cultural expression, and within it I had found an art form to imprint my feelings, talents and skills.

Taking advantage of the knowledge about Brazilian history and culture, I became a professional tour guide implementing narrative skills oriented to intellectually curious travelers to offer personalized experiences based on their needs and love to learn. I founded my own cultural tourism company in Brazil under the name of Capoeira Paraty.

Recently, after the COVID-19 outbreak I have been putting together, with the help from other tourism professionals, a project called Impact Travel Collective in which we are intending to aggregate and offer an online platform for guides, tours and experiences with positive impact under the Triple Bottom Line perspective and based on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals starting in the Latin America region.

MONICA, USA - About "Paraty: Walking through history" walking tour and "Capoeira: The Art of Resistance" cultural workshop

"This is a MUST for anyone coming to Paraty! Absolutely fantastic experience. We have travelled all over the world with top notch, highly rated guides and Juan is one of the best. He is fluent in Portuguese, English and Spanish. Most importantly, he knows how to tell a story in a way that is interactive, interesting and relevant. Our first tour with Juan was a historical tour of Paraty and even during the pandemic, sweating like crazy wearing masks in the heat of the summer, time just flew by. This was not your ordinary rattling off "facts and dates" tour. Rather, it was more like a conversation expertly guided with an intricate, engaging narrative. We loved our time so much with Juan that we decided to sign up for his capoeira tour too even though I am not athletic at all. For this tour, we met at a nearby mangrove beach and Juan brought his adorable 4 year old daughter. It was absolutely perfect: the beautiful breezy and shady setting, the chill vibe, the way he methodically weaved the history of capoeira with the moves. It was simple, easy to follow, no pressure and very interesting. My daughter and I were able to pick up the moves quite easily. To top it off, Juan is a well read, intelligent and caring individual who cares deeply about nature and sustainable tourism. We left feeling connected not only to Brazil's history but also deeply touched by how Juan's passion and mission. Both of his historical tour and the capoeira tour are a MUST for anyone who wants to have a more personal connection to Paraty's history and its people!"
