I have had several careers, Most have been customer service, After school, I took a job as a dishwasher and in one year did the cook, waiter and asst mgr roles and became manager. Overall I worked for 3 different chains and my last one had included where I trained new managers. Also was involved with the community .
Moved to a job where I delivered for a florist. Recipients were always happy/emotional for many various reasons, and I got to be a part of it. Became a manager for one of their shops.
Moved on to the career that I went to school for and become a computer programmer. Had to use logic and be able to plan for any errors. The program of if, then or else. Had to code in for any keystroke that might be in error and tell the computer how to fix that. Little did I know I would carry it into my bus and tour directing careers. Planning in advance for errors and have plan B
Realized an office environment wasn’t really for me. I drove a bus moving physically/mentally handicap people to jobs or school. Also took people to senior day care centers., and would take the clients to dialysis which was a sobering, emotional part of my job. I was promoted to safety training mgr of the MTA in MD.
I wanted to be outside and discover the world. I became a coach driver. I worked with guides and GLs. I had fun being around different people and cultures. And the guides prepared me for my final career. I watched them and listened to their stories. I had the opportunity to see what turned groups on and what bored them to tears. I drove as far west as Rapid City, south to Nashville and FL, and as far north as Montreal and to the Maritimes. The company sold and I figured it was time for the TD seat.
This final career has been my longest at 14 plus years now. I love it. I like being an entertainer and telling what I know. I feel like a pied piper to students and adults’. even on adult tours, I call kids, I learned from many guides how to keep them engaged. I research and try to do site visits to new location. I treat clients like I want to be treated if I was a passenger. I am serious when need be, but have fun also. I like being a teacher for all ages. I think one of the best thing is doing trivia of little known facts. It amazes them of things they never knew.
