About

Gary Dennis Grew up in a house of insanely competitive know it all’s, cultivating a passion for NYC history, golden age of Hollywood and of Vaudeville theaters, movie palaces and the architects who designed them.

Gary owned Movie Place, one of NYC’s largest independent and best (NY Magazine Best of NY) movie rental stores on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.

In 2005 Gary launched a one-man effort to rename 103rd Street Humphrey Bogart Place, in honor of the late actor who grew up there.  Gary’s efforts paid off with a street renaming and a plaque on the childhood home of Mr. Bogart.  A ceremony was held in June 2006, hosted by Gary and attended by various NYC commissioners and (most importantly) Lauren Bacall. For his efforts, Gary was the subject of numerous articles in The New York Times. In 2006, Gary was forced to close the business.

Since then, Gary became a licensed New York City tour guide, which is just a formality, since he has been lecturing for years, to anyone who’ll listen.

Testimonials

From the guest survey for a virtual tour last night (5/10/2021)

A lot of info. Gary made it interesting and fun with some great stories and side notes! Very thorough! We signed up for his Grand Central presentation.

From Viator

As born and bred New Yorkers, and users of the NYC subway system, we were excited and amazed to learn so much about its history, from the 19th Century to present time.
Gary, our guide, made the tour fun and informative. He talked about: how it got started, who were the men behind it all, how the NYC government played a part in it, what countries and states influenced them, and the different types of engines and materials used to make the train cars throughout the decades. Plus, other interesting tidbits and newsworthy facts about the subway stations and tunnels.
This tour brought back fond memories of us traveling the different trains and subway lines of our youth.
Gary instructed us to look up, down and around the subway stations to see the beautiful craftsmanship, murals, art and tiles that is and has been part of its history. Which is easily missed when you are rushing to get to your train.
Whether you are a born New Yorker or new to the city, this amazing tour is one that shouldn't be missed. The time just "speeds" and you don't want it to end.
Thank you Gary for an enjoyable experience! by R. Festa 1/20/2020

Gary deserves more than five stars. He gave us the background and rich history of what has lied below
our feet and what we had taken for granted for so long. the tour was great value. 1/21/2020

From Tours by Locals

We selected Tours by Locals based on a family referral. Our day with Gary met our expectations and then some. His knowledge of New York is vast, heartfelt and truly comes from a born and bred New Yorker. Really appreciated his willingness to tailor the tour based on our input. His listening skills truly made for a interactive day learning about New York city. Loved his insider knowledge of film sites and historical perspectives of current and past events in Manhattan. And, he was fun to be with. 10/9/2020

Gary was an ABSOLUTE professional. I have used guides all around the world and Gary is one of the best. It was my 10 year old daughter's first trip to New York and Gary tailored the trip brilliantly. Gary is a wealth of knowledge about the city's history. He made to most out of the 5 hour tour. I cannot believe all that we fit into the 5 hour tour. He was absolutely amazing with my daughter. I love that he made my daughter the center of the trip. He talked directly to her not down to her. THANK YOU 2/10/2020
