About

I was brought up on Long Island but got the travel bug early.  My guiding life started when I was living in Israel at age 18.  I graduated from Tufts University in Boston with a BA in Early Childhood Development but was more interested in running the freeform radio station and spending a semester in Nigeria trying to meet Fela Kuti.  Later back in NYC after college I had a horse and buggy gig for a year touring around Central Park.   Before walking across the country for peace in 1986, I worked in marketing for Rounder Records and started hanging out in jazz clubs, starting a lifelong habit.  I escaped business life in NYC to live on a houseboat in Sausalito for 6 years where I began my life as an ITMI accredited OTR and camping tour guide across the US and the rest of the Americas.  Settling back in NYC, I eventually settled down for good and have a wonderful family and home in Astoria  for 20 years now – all the while keeping my hand in the jazz world as the owner of Big Apple Jazz Tours.

Fun Fact!
In 1986, for 8 1/2 months I walked across the USA from LA to DC on The Great Peace March for Global Nuclear Disarmament.
Hobbies & Interests
I have a strong interest in promoting the local jazz scene. Toward that end I have owned a Harlem jazz club, managed musicians, have produced a weekly jazz singers showcase, written articles, published photos, created videos, and maintain @BigAppleJazz on Instagram to boost under the radar jazz clubs and musicians.

Virtual Tour Experience

I did a 3-hour virtual jazz tour for Urbanist

Testimonials

This Was Freakin’ Awesome!

So great! You have to do this if you like any music at all. Gordon is fantastic! His passion and lifelong love affair with jazz is infectious!

The music was fabulous! We mixed with the band at the second stop and that was really special! The guitarist played with Dizzy Gillespie and other band members had played with George Benson (one of my personal favorites!) and more. Totally cool cats!

Gordon decided to change our third destination on the spot because he just got some new information about a singer. How plugged into the scene is that! She was great, too and really connected with us. All three clubs were local intimate places so you weren’t one of tons of people.

Gordon was so generous as to give us a recommendation for after the theater tonight that clearly is not a place someone not in the scene could find (you’ll have to take the tour to find out why!)

I can’t say enough great things about this. We’ll be talking about it forever. Take the tour. Get up and dance (we did!). No rules, everybody’s cool. Adults young and old will love this! Gordon, I am so glad you do this!

You. Are. Awesome!
